Introduction

There has never been a time when careers guidance has been as important for young people as it is today. At Waseley Hills High School, we have a vital role to play in preparing our pupils for the next stage of their education or training and beyond. Our pupils will be embarking upon a career pathway, which is more challenging and complex than that faced by previous generations. Global opportunities and increasing technological advances will result in young people having several careers during their working life and potentially working in a career that does not currently exist.

With the greater choices of education, training and employment, our aim is to prepare pupils for these ever-changing opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences and to equip them with the skills to manage the choices, changes, and transitions ahead of them.

We have a whole school approach to careers education. This allows pupils to access the necessary information to help them make informed decisions about their futures. Our careers programme throughout the year supports our careers education curriculum and in line with the most recent careers guidance strategy (Last updated Jan 23). Careers Education at Waseley Hills High School is not just a stand-alone strand; it is thoroughly integrated into every area of the school and woven into the school curriculum.

What does careers at Waseley look like?

Careers education, information and advice is delivered throughout our Learn 4 Life curriculum, within our pastoral programme and across subjects. This comprehensive approach means that students experience dedicated timetabled sessions to explore their employability, transition point options, destinations and have meaningful encounters with those from the world of work and higher education.  ;Students develop an explicit understanding of how the knowledge and skills they gain within their subject lessons aid in their readiness for life after school.

Work Experience

We believe strongly in the value of work experience and all students in Year 10 and 12 complete 5 days of work experience that allows them to experience skills and industries that are linked to their career aspiration. We of course encourage students to source face to face work experience where possible as we feel these placements are most valuable.

Students are predominantly responsible for arranging their own work experience in a timely manner; however, they are supported in this by their form tutor and the work experience coordinator. 

The school provide students access to a database that can support heir search. 

All students must return the relevant work experience forms before any placement commences, these can be found here.(link to forms)

All placements have to undergo a health and safety and safeguarding check before they can be approved.  Therefore details of all placements must be submitted to the Careers Lead, Emma Sellers no later than 20^th March 2024. ESellers@waseleyhills.worcs.sch.uk

Labour Market Information

What is LMI – Labour Market Information?

Labour Market Information (LMI) is information that provides insight into the labour market. 

LMI will focus on :

• The industries that are growing and declining
• The types of levels of jobs that are increasing and decreasing
• What supply of labour is available – number, skill, and qualification levels.

Why does it matter?

LMI provides information about growth areas and labour markets in Worcestershire to help students to make informed decisions about their future career paths.

Worcestershire Apprenticeships | Helping young people and employers achieve through Apprenticeships (worcsapprenticeships.org.uk) This site lists apprenticeship opportunities that are available in the Worcester area. Worcestershire Apprenticeships support young people interested in Traineeships or Apprenticeships. They can also provide students with impartial information, advice, guidance and support.   NGTU | Home (notgoingtouni.co.uk) This is a site aimed at post-16 students who do not wish to apply to university.  Several Post A Level apprenticeships include degree-level qualifications-so this can be a suitable alternative for students.  GetMyFirstJob | Apprenticeships, Degree Apprenticeships, Work Experience & Graduate Jobs This site provide access to a variety of apprenticeships across all industries on a national level.    Apprentice Stories - Amazing Apprenticeships This includes a selection of short videos in which apprentices talk about and share their experiences.

Measuring the Impact and Success of Careers

We are constantly reviewing and reflecting on the provision of career education at Waseley.  We quality control our provision in several ways:

 

Student Survey - Unifrog

A key part of our strategy is student surveys for each year group throughout the academic year using the unifrog platform. These surveys collate student voice regrading the provision of careers advice, information and activities that are provided by the school.  The survey measures the impact of the school’s careers provision to each academic year groups but also measures and collates the specific needs of the individual student.  This valuable feedback enables us to develop our strategic provision moving forward. 

 

Compass Plus

The careers lead has termly meetings with Alex King Enterprise Co-ordinator, Skills and Investment Team from Worcestershire County Council to review the school’s provision against the Gatsby Benchmarks and to ensure the school is fully compliant with government guidelines.  The school’s performance if officially recorded on Compass Plus.
